Tampa Preservation has invited A Modern Line and other trade professionals to exibit and demonstate their particular skills this Saturday 5-21 at the first annual Historic Homes Workshop. This event is being held @ Weichert Realty, Yates and Assoc. 1046 W. Busch Blvd. Tampa 33612
My particular participation will be an exhibit of Heywood Wakefield furniture in the various stages of refinishing along with tips and demonstrations on saving your vintage pieces of furniture.

Continuing classes for refinishing Heywood Wakefield Modern furniture
We had a really fun time working on our students projects during the first ever class! I had a good response for the classes but only ended up with 2 students the first time around, but I'm willing to go ahead and schedule another class and this has been a great experience all around for me as well as the people that took the first class. We had a lot of people that couldn't commit to the 3 Sunday morning classes due to other obligations. If you still have an interest, I've got a sign up sheet @ Kaleidoscope 6415 N. Florida Ave. 33604 813-234-5800 for the next class. I would be interested in what days would work for everyones schedule and if I can make it work with my schedule I would like to move forward with a new class in the near future. Due to space constraints I will be keeping the class size to 4 students per class. Classes are a go. Here's the information:
I've had enough interest to go ahead and schedule these classes. They will be held @ 6415 N. Florida Ave. Tampa 33604. This is going to be next door to our retail location Kaleidoscope partly outside for the sanding / dissasambly portion and inside for the actual finish application.
I'm tentatively setting the dates as follows:
Three consecutive Sundays from 3/20 through 4/3 @ 9:15-10:45 AM.
Hopefully not too early for you late risers and early enough so it doesn't ruin your plans for the day.
I hope to get a good jump on your project in the first week and cover a lot of ground. There will be information on basic techniques for all aspects covering everything from identification all the way through the finishing process during the 3 week course. Hopefully you already have a piece that you would like to refinish. If so please let me know what you plan to bring to class (item # would be great) so I can have the proper tools on hand. Some pieces require imaginative processes!
Tools
If you do not already own a 5" orbital sander with a hook and loop pad, I would seriously recommend the investment. They can be purchased at any home improvement store for about $60-$70 or less. I personally use Dewalt equipment and have had excellent luck and many years of use but you can find less expensive brands with the same hook and loop paper exchange. I will supply the sandpaper for this class. I would not recommend hand sanding with a sanding block and loose paper although you will need some loose sheets in the long term. It is way too time intensive. I do not use chemical strippers and don't recommend them. If you decide after the class you want to use that's completely up to you.
If you have a pair of folding plastic sawhorses please bring them if you have the means. The finish process requires laying out parts after sanding and refinishing for the drying process.
An old sheet or table cloth.
Some clean preferably white cotton rags. Old tee-shirts work well. I will have some if you don't but you will need in the long term anyway so hunt through your drawers.
If you own one, bring a cordless screwdriver or drill and both #2 and #3 phillips bits. Most of H/W pieces are assembled with these although I've seen some straight head screws used. Might want to bring a multi-head scrw driver as well.
Deposit:
I will need a $70 deposit to secure your place in class and to cover supplies. The balance will be due at the start of class on Sunday 3/20. Due to projected interest the deposit will not be refundable and will secure your place in class. Please remit before Friday 3/18. Please make checks payable to:

I'm considering a course of about an hour and a half sometime on Sunday morning for 3 consecutive weeks starting in late March, early April. in the Seminle Heights neighborhood of Tampa. I would like to start with about 4-5 people per class so if you're interested please let me know ASAP.
This would be a very comprehensve course covering a breif history of the company, item identification, what to look for when buying a piece, valuation, proper disasembly procedure, tools you'll need and the best way to get your piece back to original condition. It will extensively cover sanding and finish procedures and reassembly. I would like to have people that sign up to have a piece that they want to refinish as this will be a hands on class and we would work on the pieces collectively.
The price would be $210 for all 3 weeks including supplies.

Grand opening for the best new place for Heywood Wakefield
Although we had a soft opening on Jan. 7th, we are having our "Grand Opening" party on Thursday Feb. 10th from 6-9 P.M. @ 6415 N. Florida Ave. Tampa 33604. Many thanks to all that have stopped in already and checked us out! We look forward to being the premier retail venue for Heywood Wakefield vintage furniture in West Central Florida and hope to have a catalog of pieces we have in inventory that you can choose the finish for ahead of time.

New Seminole Heights business coming soon!
Is Tampa ready for a new funky, unique, one of a kind and mid-century modern retail location? A Modern Line and Karen Brown Interiors along with the the business acumen of Sherry's Yesterdaze are betting this will be a winning combination! We have recently signed a lease in the 6400 hundred block of N. Florida Ave.Tampa to open a brand new venture that features home furniture and decor items. We hope to be up and running under the banner of Kaleidoscope for the Home with a soft opening on or about Jan 1 2011. Maybe a little sooner depending on circumstances.We will keep everyone posted on the progress as we get things up and running. Stay tuned to this blog for upcoming info.
